11/12/2020 Southern Lad as good as he can be’

Earlier on the Randwick card, Southern Lad (Ocean Park) will make his first start for almost four months in the Razor Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m), one of four runners at the meeting for local trainer John O’Shea. The five-time winner has not raced since finishing fifth in the Show County (Gr 3, 1200m) over the same course and distance on August 22, but has warmed up for his return with two trials in November. “I reckon he is as good as we can have him first-up,” O’Shea said. “He has got a really good first-up record and a good record at the 1200 metres at Randwick, particularly when he draws well. Drawn barrier two on Saturday, he will lob just behind the lead and there is a good bit of speed there, which shouldn’t worry him. He’s a horse that will look the winner at some stage. He is going really well.” Southern Lad will be ridden by Regan Bayliss as ten runners are set to go to post in the $140,000 contest.
